Please note: This is my second attempt at publishing this blog post. The first time was indeed published, but when I went to my website a couple days later to create content for my social media platforms, the blog post was taken down and put back into my drafts. I don’t know what happened or why, but I am praying that everything goes well with this one. I do apologize to my subscribers for having to receive the same blog more than once.
But without further ado, let’s get to the 10 ways to become more like Jesus!
As a follower of Christ, we should strive to become like Christ. Although we are not perfect and tend to fall short of the glory of God, we have the Holy Spirit to help us live a godly life. Also, we are called to be a light and show Jesus to the world. So, I have listed 10 ways we can become more like Jesus and exemplify a godly life.
If you have not read part one of this two-part blog series, you can do so here. In part one, I am sharing a testimony of mine and my experience of spiritual warfare I endured at the beginning of this year.
1. Have a Relationship With Abba Father
God isn’t just our Creator. If you have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, you have become a child of God, making you an heir of the Kingdom of God and a co-heir to Christ.
To have a relationship with anyone, you must spend adequate time with them. If not, you
only know of them, but do not truly know them. Abba Father desires a relationship with you. And Jesus Christ made it possible. Having a relationship with God brings forth so many benefits.
When you get to know God, you start getting to know yourself, your purpose and your God-given calling.
Jesus had a relationship with God the Father and we must too. Why? When we stay close to God and He is close to us, He will be able to protect us, direct us, give us peace for our hearts and minds, and give our souls rest when needed. All of that and more comes with staying in the Word and in communication with God.
Jesus has said that many false prophets have gone out in the world. Also, He said, to be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves. Matthew 10:16 You will maintain your innocence by abiding and growing in your relationship with Abba Father. Being shrewd is having clever discerning awareness. By spending time with God, you will grow in your discernment. That is something that we need in these days. So, a relationship with our God is important.
2. Have Child-like Faith
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8
As a child, when you asked your parents for something and they would tell you that they’d get it for you, you didn’t doubt them one bit. You believed that they would keep their word, their promise to you. You went on living your life, enjoying your day expecting that your request would be fulfilled.
Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:9-11
Just like a child that goes to his or her earthly parents who have limited supply and trust that they will provide, protect, and keep their promises, then we as adult children can go to our heavenly Father who has unlimited supply and ask for what we need and wait expectantly for Him to give it.
It is noted that Jesus is the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:2 We should follow in His footsteps.
3. Be Prayerful
I have heard the saying, ‘’Battles are won in the spiritual realm’’. When we pray on our own
behalf or the behalf of another, our prayers go up to heaven.
Prayer is one of the spiritual weapons we use against Satan.
Jesus often prayed. He often isolated Himself and spent time praying to the Father. There have
been many miracles that took place, through prayer and faith. Many healings and deliverances
because of faith.
Why do we pray? We pray thanking God for His goodness and faithfulness. We go to Him confessing our failures and repenting when needed. We go to Him for the things we need and on behalf of our loved ones. We pray to seek direction and answers for major decisions. And when we need courage, strength, and rest on this journey, we pray for that too.
Prayer is simply communication with God. And He highly values this time with you.
4. Be Set Apart From The World
Be ye Holy, because the Lord your God is holy. Being holy is not being holier than thou. It is a
matter of being set apart. Being different than the rest of the world. Jesus Himself was different and everyone knew it. The way He carried Himself, the way He talked, the way He taught, and even the way He loved. He didn’t conform and follow the crowd. He didn’t cower down to religion.
He came to be a light in a world filled with darkness. And that alone takes boldness, great courage, and many prayers. Just like Jesus, you are called to be a light. But you cannot be that light if you are too afraid to stand out and look and live differently than the rest of the world.
5. Have an Attitude of Servitude
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:14-15
Even though He was a leader, He humbled Himself as a servant.
Our calling, gifts, and purpose are not for us to withhold or glorify ourselves with. We are called to use them in service of another.
Also, there is always a need that needs to be fulfilled. In our churches, homes, places of work, or even out on the street. Each day you wake, you can ask God in prayer if you can do anything for someone today. If you seek, you will find.
6. Make Time For Others
If patience was a person, it would be Jesus. Even though He was always on a mission and had
things to do, He always stopped and made time for anyone who called out to Him.
That was the mission.
We live in a world where we are steadily busy. If I’m being honest, more busy than fruitful.
Jesus made time for others. Spent time with them. Listened to their needs and wants.
And always had a solution for them.
He was the solution.
And as we make time for others, even if it is just sitting and listening, we can show Jesus to
others. By helping, being concerned, and being interested in their lives.
The whole entire mission is revolved around people. I for one at times can get so caught up in ”doing” for Jesus, but fail to do the very thing He wants us to do. Sit with people and show them Christ. But, this is not a command to, ”partner with the wicked.” As the word states: bad company corrupts good character. But we should definitely be a light and minister to those around us.
And that can simply mean living the Gospel. Not just preaching the Gospel. And that calls you to be set apart and live differently.
7. Live Intentionally
Everything that Jesus did, was intentional. Nothing was ever wasted. Time, resources, purpose, etc. It was all intentional.
As a follower of Christ, we should follow His example. Be intentional with everything He has given us. Questions to ask yourself. ”How am I spending my time and with whom?” ”Is my conversations uplifting, and encouraging or do I waste time gossiping and talking about irrelevant things?” ”Do I spend money wisely or am I wasteful?” Am I using my spiritual gifts and walking in God’s calling over my life?
I believe time and money are the two biggest things we waste. I for one have experienced wasting time that I had to repent of and wasting money that led to depression when I lost my job and didn’t have much saved.
I’ve learned but yet still learning and growing.
8. Be Forgiving and Merciful
It can be hard to forgive those who hurt you. It can be hard to show mercy when they do not
deserve it. But it is easy to ask God for forgiveness and mercy like we deserve it.
As Jesus was being crucified, He called out to Abba Father and asked Him to forgive them for
they know not what they are doing.
He knew the spiritual side of things. He knew the enemy that was behind the hate, slander, and attacks. He knew the bondage they were in. And as long as we don’t forgive, we too will be in bondage with the enemy. But forgiveness will set you free.
Forgive, let it go, and move on. So you can be free and forgiven by God.
If Jesus was willing to forgive those who persecuted and crucified Him, who are we not to forgive and show mercy? A servant isn’t greater than their master.
9. Live Sacrificially
This can actually be tied to ”Have an Attitude of Servitude”. When you live sacrificially, you are remembering the ultimate sacrifice Jesus gave. He gave His entire life to bring redemption to our souls. What do you have that you can sacrifice for others? Is it food, money, or maybe your time by running an errand for a neighbor?
Can you set aside 30 minutes a day to read the Bible or be in prayer? Can you slow down and recognize what’s really going on in the world and find a way to use your unique gift to be a solution? Will you fast for a family member or friend’s deliverance? And will you be willing to risk your own life for the name of Jesus’ sake?
10. Walk Worthy of the Calling
As a prisoner for the Lord, then I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1-3
What does this simply mean? Live a God-honoring and God-fearing life. Even if you are not given a major assignment or task, simply living to please the Lord is walking worthy of the calling that you have received. Who you are is more important than what you do. God looks at the heart more than the deeds.
We are called to be fruitful and multiply, but we must be filled with the fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
