Have you ever asked yourself, “What is my purpose?” As I was sitting and pondering that question one day, this came to me: My purpose is to know God and make Him known.
To know God is to know His word. To know God is to have a relationship with Him. To know God is to have a prayer life talking and listening to Him.
I started this year off in Genesis, the beginning. While in deep study, I received three lessons from God all from chapter 1.
- We are created for a purpose.
- Our tongue has power.
- We are to live holy and godly lives.
We Are Created For a Purpose.
The chapter opens with four words that will bring us back to reality. Bring us back to why we are here, and who we’re here for.
In the beginning, God.
Our purpose begins and ends with Him.
He created everything and everything He created was for a purpose.
He created light to shine on the earth that was formless and dark. He separated the light from the darkness. He created a vault, a dome to separate water from water. Then He created land to produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seeds in them.
He also created lights to mark sacred times, days, and years. And He created the sun to govern the day and the moon to govern the night.
He created the seas and sea creatures, the livestock, and every animal that scurries along the ground.
And He created mankind. He created us in His image.
He gave the sea creatures, the livestock, and all wild animals along with mankind this command: Be fruitful and increase in number.
What does all of that mean to us?
In a spiritual sense, He has created us to shine brightly in a dark world, be separated (holy) from the rest of the world, produce and create, and make disciples of all nations. He has called us to steward well all that He has given us: our lives, jobs/careers, marriages, relationships, kids, ministries, businesses, finances, and our time. It all belongs to Him.
To do all that, we must stay connected to our Creator. We get to know Him when we are connected to Him and we make Him known when our lives worship and glorify Him.
So if you ever find yourself asking the question, ”What is my purpose?”, I highly recommend going back to the beginning of creation in the Book of Genesis to seek the Creator on what you are on earth to do. In due time, He will give you specific instructions and assignments.
Our Tongue Has Power
Before anything came to be, God spoke and declared, ”Let there be.” Each time, whatever He spoke came to pass.
Proverbs 18:21 states, “The tongue has the power of life and death; those who love it will eat its fruit.”
This shows that you must be mindful of the words you speak over your own life and in the lives of others.
Speaking negatively about your life and circumstances will only result in a negative life. What you speak will come to pass.
Declaring good things over your life and keeping a positive mindset will help God’s goodness and favor manifest in your life.
What do you want for your marriage? Let there be.
What do you want for your business? Let there be.
What do you want for your life? Let there be.
Healing? Deliverance? Let there be by proclaiming the word of God over your life and the lives of others.
But with this kind of faith, action is required.
God declared, ”Let there be,” but He also did the work to make it come to pass. He didn’t declare and wait until someone else did all the work.
So we should do the same. Declare, pray, fast, and put in the work. God will do the rest.
Also, make sure that your words are aligned with your prayers. You can’t pray for healing, deliverance, help with finances, etc. then speak doubt. Your prayers and the words that you speak out need to align with one another.
Live Holy and Godly Lives
When God created us in His image, our purpose is to live our lives following the pattern of His character.
In Leviticus 19:2, God commanded us to be holy because He is holy.
What does it mean to live a holy life? Simply put, to be set apart or in other words, be separated. We are to be separated from sin and evil.
To be holy is to be different. We are not called to fit in with society and conform to world views. Romans 12:1-2 tells us ”In view of God’s mercy, to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
We can honor and revere God by living a life of holiness. What does that look like?
- Prioritizing reading the scripture, taking the time for prayer, and adopting a fasting lifestyle.
- Walking in the Fruit of the Spirit.
- Not following the crowd when the crowd is living unholy.
- Living a life of repentance.
- Avoiding sexual sin, gossip, idolatry, idleness, drunkness, etc.
- Dying to self and living surrendered to Christ.
- Loving what God loves and hating what God hates.
- Choosing and pleasing God over pleasing others.
- Leading a life of servitude.
- Being forgiving and compassionate
How to live a godly life?
I came across an article about godliness and what it means. It states that ”Godliness means conforming to the character of God in your thoughts, feelings, desires, and actions. Being godly is being like God”.
We are to be holy (set apart) for God’s use and lead lives that reflect the character and nature of God.
Being holy and godly is only made possible through the Holy Spirit.

If you have not accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior over your life, you can do so now. Accepting Jesus Christ is the only way to receive the Holy Spirit to help you walk in holiness and live a godly life that God delights in.
In Hebrews 12:14 it says, ”Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord”.
If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame’. For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile – the same Lord is Lord over all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. – Romans 10:9-13
