Hannah’s Prayer: How to Apply to Your Life

Many people are familiar with Hannah’s story. It is a well-known beloved story that has encouraged many of those who are battling with infertility. Her famous prayer that has touched many women included the phrase, ”Remember me”.

”Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”

1 sAMUEL 1:11

As I read Hannah’s story, I see someone who has battled with barrenness year after year, praying and weeping all the while being picked on by other people that has already bore children.

As I read this story, there is a possibility that Hannah was making this child an idol. I wonder if she ever prayed for the Lord’s will to be done in her life or if she only went to Him for her own will to be done. Was she ever happy and content with being only a wife or more importantly, a daughter and servant of the Most High God?

Another possibility could have been, that her son wasn’t supposed to be born years prior because of the position he was purposed to hold in his generation.

Either way, there is a lesson to learn and apply from Hannah’s story.

Make sure that what we are praying for doesn’t take the place of God. Out of His mercy for you, He will withhold what could do more harm than good if you idolize what He gives you.

I noticed when Hannah prayed, ”I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life”, God, shortly after, remembered her and opened her womb.

No more praying just to fill her own cup. She became devoted to the Lord and vowed to give her blessing of a son back to the Lord. And so she did and gave birth to Samuel.

Samuel, anointed and led by the Holy Spirit, would grow to become Israel’s last judge, first prophet, and the one that anointed David to be the future king of Israel.

This is the result of giving God back what He gave you. He will lead it with purpose and success.

I will go over five areas where you can apply the prayer of Hannah in your life. Marriage, Children, Finances, Spiritual Gifts, and Business.

Marriage

This is the one thing that many many people tend to idolize. No one wants to ever be alone, but rather be with someone to feel ”fulfilled” or ”complete”. Most times, it is more women than men who idolize marriage.

When you idolize marriage, you are making it or this person your god. That is a dangerous place to be. You are looking at them to do all that only Jesus can do. Only Jesus can truly satisfy. Only Jesus can complete you and give you your life’s purpose and identity.

Many women want to be a wife but don’t know how to be a daughter of God Most High. The Word of God said, ”Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.” But how can you truly be a submissive wife if you don’t first submit to the Lord? I highly recommend you read Ephesians 5:21-33 because it teaches instruction on submission and love to one another, not just instructions for the wife.

For the single people, use your single season to live wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord and get to know you and your purpose.

Ladies, while praying for a spouse, ask God to prepare you and pray for your husband’s well-being, leadership, and devotion to the Lord.

Gentlemen, ask God to prepare you for such a role as a husband and leader and pray that God is also preparing your wife for her role in this kingdom marriage.

And give your marriage back to God as it is a sacred covenant that reflects the marriage between Jesus Christ (bridegroom) and the Church (bride).

Then it will be led with vision, purpose, and success.

Children

The Bible says, ”Every good gift is from God”, and I believe that children are indeed gifts from God. But we should never idolize the gift over the Giver.

As Hannah’s prayer is about conceiving her own child, we can also apply it to our prayers regarding conceiving children. But also, we should remember God may gift us children through adoption, foster care, or being a step-parent. Those children too are good gifts from Abba Father.

I don’t have children currently, but I feel highly blessed to be an aunt-mom (a name I gave myself lol), to my nieces and nephews.

In your season of waiting, don’t make it your mission to just focus on a child. But make it your mission to trust in God’s timing, cultivate a relationship with God if you don’t have one yet, and make sure that God is first in your life.

When you receive your gift from God that you’ve been praying for, feed them, nurture them, and ween them just as Hannah did, but at one point you need to know who is in control and allow them to be led by God.

Finances

You may be asking, how can we apply Hannah’s prayer to our finances? By giving back what really belongs to Him.

Sure, you work for your money and your money provides you with a house or a rental, and your hard work provides you with everything you have and more…

But if I can be honest, look at who gave you the ability to work to get such means for you and your family.

He gave us capabilities, talents, and spiritual gifts, but most importantly, He gave us life.

Why wouldn’t we give a portion back to Him, and let Him instruct us on how to steward our finances.

When we give to the needy, we are giving back to God. Sure, not everyone you may come across is really needy. But some people do try in life and still come up short. And some may just be going through a rough season because of job loss, illness, or other unexpected things.

Don’t give just to gain. Give what your heart desires and what your resources can provide. Each person giving looks different.

When we give back to the church, we give back to God. If you don’t have a church home, ask God for direction to a good one that you can plant seeds into.

When we give God our finances, we allow Him to provide wise counsel on spending, saving, investing, sharing, and ensuring we have all we need. Abba even gives ideas to bring in extra income that will help you pay off debt and help you live the life He desires for you to have.

Spiritual Gifts

The spiritual gifts I am talking about are the ones from the Holy Spirit. Each of us was given a gift when we accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Those gifts are not meant to be withheld or used to exalt ourselves, but to edify the Church which is the body of Christ.

Have you ever looked at other people and thought, ”Wow they are more righteous than I am”, ”God has given them spiritual gifts that I don’t have”. ”I wonder what I need to do to receive those spiritual gifts.”

Then after you looked at them, you prayed, ”Father in heaven, if you will look down on your servant and remember me”.

But God doesn’t want you looking at other people. He wants you to look at Him.

Seek God for your gift(s) and ask Him to help you help others by using those specific gifts.

It will require obedience, submission, and surrender.

And if you give your will, plans, and life over to the Lord, His anointing will do what it is purposed to do.

The spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit will do what they were given to do.

Not for show and tell. Not for pride and conceitedness.

But for the will of God to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

To advance God’s Kingdom.

Business

The Most High is spreading out His church in different sectors worldwide. Some areas where God spreads His light in the darkness are business, real estate, art, music, finance, and education. That’s to only name a few.

If you are a current business owner or an aspiring business owner, you can still apply Hannah’s prayer by dedicating and giving God what He gave you.

Just like Hannah did her part by giving birth to her son that God gave her, you too can give birth to that idea that God gave you.

Birth what He gave you and nurture it but ensure your business is not the main focus. Just like Hannah, be devoted to the Lord above all else and the blessings will flow.

Samuel wasn’t meant to be an ordinary child and your business wasn’t either.

Samuel was anointed and raised to bring glory to God. Your business will bring souls to Christ and glory to God if led by the Holy Spirit.

It is not by strength that one prevails; those who oppose the Lord will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven; the Lord will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.

The Question…”Am I Not Sending You” is convi The Question…”Am I Not Sending You” is conviction and comfort rolled in one.

It’s a conviction, because God has proved time and time that He loves His people and can be trusted. It’s a comfort because knowing that we have Him to lean on for all that we need to pursue and succeed in our callings.

When you need encouragement, remind yourself of what God asked…”am I not sending you”?

Fear does more harm than good. Actually it does no Fear does more harm than good. Actually it does no good. I’m not talking about being fearful of a snake, spider etc. I’m talking about the mental fear.

You being afraid to try new things, due to the possibility of failing.
You being afraid of taking risks, due to the probability of making mistakes.
You being afraid of being set apart, due to the likelihood of losing some friends and family.
You being afraid of applying to a new job or asking for a promotion because of the fear of not feeling good enough.
You being afraid of asking someone out due to the possibility of being rejected.

All of those things and more alike are mental fears.

You never know unless you take a step.
You never know unless you try.
You never know unless you ask.

Confession: I, too would like it if God told me all of the steps and answers before moving my feet, before putting myself out there. But that’s not how it works.

It is when you take a step in faith, He will lead and guide you. And even if you do turn on the wrong path, He will come get you and put you on the right path.

Say NO to worry and fear.

Although there are times when we do wait on God, b Although there are times when we do wait on God, but there are a lot of times when God is waiting on us. He gives us sign after sign, gives us all we need and yet we don’t move our feet. Most times, out of fear of the unknown, fear of making the wrong decision, fear of not knowing everything etc. But…

No more!

I’ve been working towards a few things that God has placed on me and even though I’m not fully there yet, its a start.
