Hey ya’ll, welcome to my blog! Has any of you ever wondered exactly, how to live life as a Christian?
Lets first examine what a Christian is? What is a Christian? According to the website Dictionary.com, a Christian is someone that believes in Jesus Christ.
Thing is, there are so many people that call themselves “Christian” simply because they believe in God or because they go to church once a week or have family that goes to church. I’ve asked someone once before what is a Christian. Their response, someone that reads the Bible daily.
But, I’ll tell you the truth. As I’ve grown closer to Christ, the Lord has opened my eyes and understanding to many things. Just because someone attends church does not necessarily make them a Christian. If they have not come to Jesus, repented of their sins and confessed that Jesus is Lord and Savior, it is impossible to actually be “Christian” without Christ.
Yes, it’s great to read the Bible. Actually its a blessing, but don’t read the Bible out of obligation. Read it because you get to read so much about God’s love for you and me. Read it because it holds so much power, life, knowledge, wisdom, promises and TRUTH. And only the Truth will set you free…His name is Jesus Christ.
SO HOW EXACTLY DO WE LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE?
- In order to be Christian, you have to be a follower of Christ. To be a follower of his, you have to go to him in prayer, ask him to forgive you of your sins, confess that Jesus is Lord and Savior and change your sinful lifestyle. Contrary to what the world is telling you, the Word of God is true and remains the same: Jesus Christ is the only way.
- Spend time in prayer. Now, I am not going to tell you when to pray or how long to pray because everyone’s prayer life is different. But, I will tell you that I often talk to God throughout the day. Why? Because there are times when I want to give Him praises for all He has done. There are times when I truly need help through a situation. There are times when I need His need direction, opinion, strength and even His peace. To be honest, I talk to Him about small things too, such as shopping and I have even prayed to Him regarding my eyebrows! LOL yes silly I know, but God is my friend so its okay! God doesn’t just want to be a part of your life for a couple of hours on a Sunday, or whatever day your church worships on. He wants to be part of your life in all that you do everyday. NOTE: It’s not about the length of the prayer and you do not have to babble on in order to be heard. Just simply talk to Him about any and everything. He’s waiting on you to invite Him into your everyday life. The prayer that Jesus taught his disciples is in my last blog post.
- Read, study and apply the Word of God to your life. The Bible holds so much wisdom and truth. As Christians, we are supposed to strive daily to be like Jesus. If you don’t know but would like to know more about Jesus, read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. In those 4 Books, you will be able to read Jesus’ words and some of the miraculous things he did before ascending to heaven. You will learn what type a person he was to others, so then you’ll know what type of person you should be as a Christian. Jesus was compassionate, loving, kind, patient, faithful, devoted, prayerful, honest, forgiving, obedient, disciplined and so much more. Another benefit of reading the Bible is you get to learn how much God loves you and in turn, knock down fear, worry, anxiety, depression, doubt etc. Anything that the devil tries to hold against you, the Word of God is one of your best defenses, along with prayer and praise.
Those two commands cited above sums up the whole law. How can we claim “Christian” with hate in our hearts. We are called to be loving just as Christ is loving. We are called to let our light shine and to live our lives letting others see the love of Christ in us so that one may come to you and ask “what must I do to be saved?”. If I am being honest, it’s not always easy to love those whom show hate to you or say and do unkindly things.
*I want to share a personal experience of mine. God placed a particular person in my life that was not a nice person at all…point blank period. This person’s hatefulness made me have something heavy on my heart against them. It was very hard for me to love them but…I prayed and prayed and prayed. Eventually, the heaviness feeling in my heart let up and I didn’t let the negativity bother me as much. All that praying was helping me along the way to learn to love unlovable people. I didn’t let it have power over me any longer. God said to “love” your neighbor. During the time, this person barely had anything nice to say about anyone let alone church. But I’ve noticed some change. Now, this person shows interest when I talk about God and even read my faith-based posts. They may not be all the way there yet, but I know I am doing something right. I am doing what God told me to do…Love Them. Hopefully Love Will Lead Them To Jesus.
There are two sayings that I agree with: You Are Who You Hang Out With and Birds Of A Feather Flock Together.
When you change your life for the better and start living for Christ, one thing that will eventually change is your friendships. Some years back, after high school, I would deem myself as a very sociable person that made friends wherever I went. I went out partying many weekends and living my life “YOLO”. Granted I did have fun, but what I didn’t have was a close relationship with God as I do now. As I’ve gotten closer to God, I don’t have many friends. I am very mindful of who and what I give my time to.
As a Christian, surround yourself with good quality people. People that will uplift and encourage you instead of gossip about you and others to you. People that will pray for and with you. People that will bear your burdens and you bear their burdens. People that will support your God-given mission and you support theirs. People that don’t mind talking about Jesus and Scripture. Surround yourself with people that genuinely loves you and not secretly despise you. Pray for that type of circle. You can still have fun and enjoy your life while living for Jesus Christ.
As a Christian, continually read and study the Bible. Also, apply the wisdom, knowledge and truth of the Bible to your daily lives. Pray without ceasing. Love God and Love Others. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and be mindful of the lifestyle you are leading.
I could add so much more content, based off of God’s Word and personal experience, but I’ll leave it here.
Thanks for reading and if any of you have any suggestions to add on living a Christian life or questions, please feel free to comment!
