What exactly is self-care? According to Everyday Health, self-care is anything you do to take care of yourself so you can stay physically, mentally and emotionally well. That is practically the foundation of any self-care definition.
People may think of self-care as a more worldly term rather than biblical, but Godly people can practice self-care as well, as the scripture states: Our body is a temple of God. We ought to take care of our bodies and minds. It’s not about spending money on more things we don’t need, but rather, investing in ourselves in order to be well enough to live fruitful lives.
So therefore, I wanted to share with you all about how I practiced self-care this past Sunday and I will be sharing the links to a few things if interested. Please Note: This is not affiliate marketing. I just felt led to share the resources that help me practice self-care.
My Sunday morning started with prayer and giving thanks to God Most High. After prayer, I read from my “Be Brave” devotional. The Scripture for the day was Psalm 118:5-6. It says, “When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
The first paragraph to the devotional was a reminder to me from the Lord. It says, “We must remember who our enemy is. It is not people who choose lifestyles different from ours, other nations, religions, neighbors, children, or even a spouse who is our enemy. Our enemy is spiritual. When we remember this, we cannot help but then remember where to fight our battles – in prayer.”
To me, this is self-care. Spending time with God in prayer and learning the truth that will not only renew our minds, but also set us free.
After that much-needed devotional, I worked out for 30 minutes on “growwithjo“. Jo is a fun fitness instructor. Although her app does costs, you can also check her out on YouTube for free. But I do highly recommend her fitness app that contains workouts, devotionals, meditations, scriptures, podcasts etc. Either way, she is an awesome fitness instructor that has different levels as each of us are different.
I highly believe that our physical fitness and health are important factors to God on this life journey with Him. Not that this is more important than spiritual fitness, but I like to believe that God appreciates when His children take care of their bodies since our bodies are a temple for the Holy Spirit to perform good works through us.
After exercising, I attended Life.Church online with Pastor Craig Groeschel. Life Church has many campuses nationwide and online that you can attend if you are not near one of their campuses. Because I am not near a campus, I tune in online or listen on Spotify podcast.
Sunday’s sermon was Part 1 of How to Study the Bible. If you need help in that area, I highly recommend checking it out and many other sermons by Pastor Groeschel. He literally teaches how to apply Jesus to your everyday life.
When I finished attending church online, I took a 30-minute walk in the park.
Hmmm, the nature of God brings forth peace that surpasses understanding. There have been times when I took a walk and afterwards, felt like a whole new person. My body felt good and mind renewed. It’s also something about the sun, wind and trees that helps me hear from God.
After spending time outside in the park, I went back home where I treated my hair and scalp with a good and much-needed R&R wash. Repair and restore! 🙌😁
I highly believe treating your hair is a form of self-care.
Afterwards, I was able to sit back down and write out a list of groceries. I am getting back to being intentional with what I am feeding my body and also being more intentional on where I am spending my money for food.
Since I did go buy groceries late that day, I felt it was only right that I didn’t cook when I made it home. That was my excuse lol.
I decided on take-out for dinner and relax while watching a Hallmark Movie.
And that is how I chose to take care of myself that day.
Took care of my spiritual health by connecting with God in prayer, devotional and church.
Took care of my physical health by working out and buying the right foods for my body.
Took care of my mental health by going outside and being in nature and also, watching a cheesy romance movie. Yes, I believe Hallmark is good for my mental health lbvs. 😊😊

It’s your turn to share with me!
Leave a comment on how you practice self-care or things that you would like to do but may not get the chance. I encourage that we start taking better care of ourselves. How can we pour unto others what we don’t have?
