7 Scriptures and Prayers to Help Overcome Anxiety

In the world we live in — the news we watch, the differing opinions we read, the voices we listen to — it is no wonder that the Bible repeatedly reminds us, ”Do not be afraid, for I am with you,” and ”Do not fear, for I will be with you everywhere you go.”

Why?

Because so much of what we consume and dwell on can pull us in different directions, distract us from what truly matters, and leave us feeling overwhelmed and weighed down.

Yet, in the midst of all the noise, God continually reminds us: You do not have to be afraid. I am with you.

Keep reading for seven encouraging Scriptures and prayers to help you surrender anxiety to God and rest in His peace.

Scriptures to Overcome Anxiety

Philippians 4:4-7

”Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (NIV)

Firstly, Father God in heaven, I want to thank you for always being near me. When I start to feel anxious and afraid, your presence is the calm in my storm, the light in the darkness, and the hope and strength when I want to give up. Lord, if I have ever sought another source for the peace you alone can give, forgive me and help me seek you and receive the peace that not only surpasses understanding but also guards my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen

Isaiah 41:10

”Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” (NLT)

Lord, I know that with you, I don’t have to be afraid. When my circumstances are too overwhelming to handle, and my burdens are too heavy to carry, Father, I know that I can trust in you. I don’t have to walk with my head held down or stand in fear when your Word says that you will strengthen me and help me. When I can’t depend on my own abilities, I know that I can depend on you because you are a dependable God who can do exceedingly abundantly more than I can ask or imagine. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Proverbs 3:5-6

”Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (NIV)

Lord, I want to thank you for direction and leading me in the way I should go. In every decision I have to make in life, help me to rely on your wisdom and guidance. Help me to hear your quiet, still voice behind me saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Lord, I know that you will never lead me astray. Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts, and your ways are higher than my ways. Father God, if I ever hear you wrong and make the wrong choice, I want to thank you for showing me grace and putting me back on the right path. One more thing, will you help me surrender my will and submit my plans over to you, so that I can live a purpose-filled and flourishing life that Jesus Christ died to give me? Amen.

John 16:33

”I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (NLT)

Because of you, Lord, I don’t have to worry about tomorrow, fear not having enough, fear not knowing all things, or fear the doctor’s reports. I don’t have to worry about what my circumstances say, what the news says, or even what my enemies say. What matters is what Your word says. When Jesus said that He has overcome the world, that gives me permission to walk in peace. In peace, knowing that I can overcome every obstacle, setback, or challenge. No matter the attack against me, when you, Lord, are for me, who or what can be against me? I am an overcomer because greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. Amen.

Isaiah 43:1-3

”But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the One who formed you says, ”Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.

When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.

For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”

Father God, you are Lord of all lords, King of all kings, Creator of heaven and earth, my Savior who calls me by name. The One who cared so much about me that you chose to redeem me from what was separating me from you. I can go through deep waters with courage because you are there holding my hand. I can endure difficult and challenging things because you will not let me drown. When I am pressed on every side, I know that I am safe because you will not let those troubles destroy me but rather build me. I thank you, Lord, for your faithfulness and protection. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

God is Faithful Sign

John 14:1-4

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the Way to the place where I am going. Emphasis added. (NIV)

God Most High, one of the most comforting things is to know that Jesus will come back in all power and glory to get me. This life can be so hard at times, but you didn’t leave me to myself. Instead, you gave me a gift of a Comforter, your Holy Spirit, to lead me, teach me, and bring to remembrance all things you have said before. So while Jesus is away preparing a room for me, help me walk in my calling and purpose daily to show others the Way, Truth, and Life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen

Isaiah 40:31

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up like wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (KJV)

Lord, I know during the waiting, you are working. When I am weak and tired, I can renew my strength by leaning on you. Thank you, Father, for giving me rest when I need it and strength to keep going. I love you forevermore. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

PSALM 23

A shepherd carrying a sheep
The Lord is my Shepherd; I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me besides peaceful streams. He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His name.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and staff protect and comfort me.
You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue all the days in my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

The Question…”Am I Not Sending You” is conviction The Question…”Am I Not Sending You” is conviction and comfort rolled in one.

It’s a conviction, because God has proved time and time that He loves His people and can be trusted. It’s a comfort because knowing that we have Him to lean on for all that we need to pursue and succeed in our callings.

When you need encouragement, remind yourself of what God asked…”am I not sending you”?

Fear does more harm than good. Actually it does no Fear does more harm than good. Actually it does no good. I’m not talking about being fearful of a snake, spider etc. I’m talking about the mental fear.

You being afraid to try new things, due to the possibility of failing.
You being afraid of taking risks, due to the probability of making mistakes.
You being afraid of being set apart, due to the likelihood of losing some friends and family.
You being afraid of applying to a new job or asking for a promotion because of the fear of not feeling good enough.
You being afraid of asking someone out due to the possibility of being rejected.

All of those things and more alike are mental fears.

You never know unless you take a step.
You never know unless you try.
You never know unless you ask.

Confession: I, too would like it if God told me all of the steps and answers before moving my feet, before putting myself out there. But that’s not how it works.

It is when you take a step in faith, He will lead and guide you. And even if you do turn on the wrong path, He will come get you and put you on the right path.

Say NO to worry and fear.

Although there are times when we do wait on God, b Although there are times when we do wait on God, but there are a lot of times when God is waiting on us. He gives us sign after sign, gives us all we need and yet we don’t move our feet. Most times, out of fear of the unknown, fear of making the wrong decision, fear of not knowing everything etc. But…

No more!

I’ve been working towards a few things that God has placed on me and even though I’m not fully there yet, its a start.
